When Reema (name changed) first started noticing dandruff-like powder on her scalp, she immediately consulted with her mother and aunties. They looked into their list of home remedies passed on from generation to generation, to find an effective cure for the malady which has struck another one of their own.

However, Reema noticed that rather than subduing, the itching was now started spreading to other parts of her body - dry, scaly patches were starting to show on her elbows and knees as well. As days passed, these rashes started getting worse, and sometimes even started to bleed. The constant pain and discomfort led to many sleepless nights. Meeting people was becoming embarrassing and awkward causing a lot of mental agony for her. Exhausting all home remedies, Reema now decided to approach a professional consultant.

This is the situation when most people approach a doctor, says Dr. Kiran B Nair, CEO Of Vaidya Healthcare at Perumbavoor, Kerala. He explains how the above symptoms seen in Reema are not Dandruff as self-diagnosed by Reema and her family, but a more serious disorder called Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune, inflammatory disorder of the skin. It is characterized by red, scaly patches with silvery-white scales that can crack and bleed due to itching. For people with psoriasis, it is a traumatic experience. “I was not able to get even a good night’s sleep due to the pain and itching”, laments Reema.

According to Dr. Kiran, the cause of psoriasis varies from person to person. It can be food, allergies, climate, or hereditary factors. Identifying this trigger is important for preventing flare-ups of psoriasis. Psoriasis can be divided into three stages depending on the severity. Scalp psoriasis, which was the case with Reema, is often the first stage of psoriasis.

“Ayurveda is the only branch of medicine that offers a permanent cure for psoriasis”, says Dr. Kiran. Ayurveda takes the route of internal detoxification for dealing with psoriasis. Oral medications such as medicated ghee when taken for the prescribed period of time, strengthen the immune system by cleansing each and every cell in the body. This allows the body to fight an autoimmune disorder like psoriasis from within. “Ayurveda addresses the problem at its core and strives to strengthen the immune system, while in other branches of medicine, the immune system is suppressed to abate the symptoms for the time being. They only address the acute inflammation by the application of topical steroids”, claims Dr. Kiran.

People suffering from psoriasis for long periods can develop psoriatic arthritis which involves painful swelling in multiple joints. This is a very difficult condition for the clinician to treat - as treating psoriasis will worsen arthritis while treating arthritis will worsen psoriasis. However, Dr. Kiran recounts how the doctors at Vaidya Healthcare were able to successfully cure a 65-year-old patient who was suffering from psoriatic arthritis. “He went back home after successfully treating his condition and regularly sends us photos of him enjoying his life with his family”, says Dr. Kiran.

Psoriasis being an autoimmune disorder will always be in our body. However, by avoiding the triggering factors, and by taking the medicines as prescribed by the physicians at Vaidya Healthcare, psoriasis can be controlled”, says Dr. Kiran. Patients like Reema can now lead a psoriasis-free, confident life.
